EMFT’s Commitment to Pet Safety: Empowering Firefighters with Life-Saving Skills

Madison County, IN – The East Madison Fire Department (EMFT) is equipped with pet oxygen masks on our engines, enabling us to provide assistance to pets suffering from smoke inhalation during structure fires. In September, a group of eight off-duty EMFT members undertook a Pet Rescuer CPR class in Fort Wayne. The primary objective of this initiative was to enhance our comprehension of techniques to aid our four-legged companions during such critical situations.

Dr. Amanda Hilliard DVM, from Northeast Indiana Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital, demonstrated an exceptional commitment to our cause by going above and beyond in her instruction. Her comprehensive coverage included topics like the utilization of pet oxygen masks and ambu-bags, which are not typically part of the standard pet owner curriculum. This course proved to be of exceptional quality, and we take pride in the impressive turnout of our members.

Our department has an unwavering commitment to seeking continuous opportunities for additional training. This training endeavor was particularly significant, as it added to our expertise in assisting four-legged victims during structure fires and other significant events.
