East Madison Fire Territory

The East Madison Fire Territory was established on January 1, 2022, through the merger of the Chesterfield Union Township and Richland Township fire departments. This consolidation aimed to enhance the level of emergency services provided to the residents of Madison County, Indiana. By combining resources and expertise, the East Madison Fire Territory has been able to offer improved coverage and response capabilities to its designated area.

Covering a first-due area of 47 square miles, the East Madison Fire Territory responds to a diverse range of locations, including residential, commercial, and agricultural areas. This coverage encompasses the entirety of Richland Township and Union Township, which includes the Town of Chesterfield. Additionally, the East Madison Fire Territory provides automatic aid to neighboring fire departments such as Lafayette Township and Adams Township, as well as the cities of Anderson and Alexandria. Furthermore, the department offers mutual aid to Delaware and Henry County, which are located in east central Indiana. These collaborative efforts ensure that emergency services are efficiently delivered across a broader region.

In 2021 alone, the East Madison Fire Territory responded to 2,165 emergency calls. This significant number highlights the demand for their services and the crucial role they play in protecting the community. Moreover, the East Madison Fire Territory is proud to staff the Madison County Hazardous Materials Team. As part of the Indiana Department of Homeland Security District 6 Hazardous Materials Team, they provide specialized hazmat response services. This regional team covers a vast area, responding to hazardous materials incidents in 13 counties within Central Indiana, which collectively span over 4,400 square miles and serve a population of 640,000 people.

With its formation, the East Madison Fire Territory has brought together the strengths and resources of two fire departments to provide efficient and effective emergency response services to their community. By expanding their coverage, collaborating with neighboring departments, and contributing to regional hazmat response efforts, the East Madison Fire Territory is dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of the residents within Madison County and beyond.
