The East Madison Fire Territory (EMFT) Cadet Program aims to develop the character, confidence, and self-esteem of each participating cadet. This free program is specifically designed for young people aged 14 (must be in high school) to 18 or those still enrolled in high school. Cadets engage in monthly meetings and training sessions focused on fire prevention, control, and emergency medical services. The program includes formal training supplemented by practical experiences through responses and developmental assignments.
The program is overseen by the EMFT Cadet Advisory Board, comprising two male and two female personnel, including advisors from each station. The board reports to the Director of Public Affairs and Outreach under the Public Affairs and Outreach Division.
Membership in the cadet program is open to applicants who have been accepted through a cadet interview board with parental permission. Cadets must maintain a minimum “C” average and submit their report cards at the end of each grading period. Failure to maintain acceptable grades may result in suspension from participation.
Additional training courses, including CPR/AED, OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens, and HIPAA, are provided to cadets. These courses can be completed at the cadet’s own pace, and a training log is provided to track progress. Completion of these courses is necessary before advancing to ride-along opportunities.
